A Railroad Town Beside Arnold Air Force Base

Heavy Duty Towing Tullahoma covers a city of 20,339 people that began as a work camp on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad in 1852. Tullahoma lies mostly in southwest Coffee County and extends into Franklin County. It is 71 miles southeast of Nashville and 77 miles northwest of Chattanooga. If a truck, bus or piece of equipment stops there, call (615) 880-9643.

I-24 exit 117 and the base

The I-24 exit list shows exit 117 as Arnold Air Force Base, Tullahoma, and notes that the interstate passes through the northeastern corner of the base for about three miles. Arnold Engineering Development Complex, built after World War II, is a major Air Force and Department of Defense test center that also supports NASA. Tell us the exit number and any mile marker you can see.

Four state routes

The Wikipedia entry for Tullahoma lists US 41A with SR 16, SR 55, SR 130 and SR 269. US 41A passes through the city and has a brief shared stretch with SR 55. SR 269 ends in Tullahoma, after 49.2 miles of two-lane road from Allisona. SR 55 is the connection to Manchester and I-24 exit 111, about 12 miles to the northeast by the Manchester entry.

The rail and the freight

The depot was a passenger station for the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway and later the Louisville and Nashville Railroad through the 1960s. Amtrak took over L&N passenger operations in 1971. A Nashville to Atlanta route was under study for reactivation in February 2023. If a trailer or lowboy is hung up on a rail crossing, call the railroad number on the crossing sign as well as ours.

Employers and the airport

Besides AEDC, the town's entry mentions Genesco, which started as General Shoe Corporation, Jacobs, formerly Sverdrup Technology, and Microcraft. Tullahoma Regional Airport was built in 1942 for the U.S. Army Air Corps and has more than 100 aircraft based there. Delivery trucks, support vans and contractor rigs go in and out of these sites, so box trucks and straight trucks are as common here as tractor-trailers.

Weather

Tullahoma sits at 1,073 feet at the edge of the Highland Rim and averages 60.62 inches of precipitation and 2.8 inches of snow a year. The record low is minus 22 and the record high is 106.

Getting here from the interstate

From I-24 exit 111, SR 55 runs about 12 miles southwest to Tullahoma, according to the Manchester entry. US 41A comes in from Winchester by way of a route that bypasses Tims Ford Lake, Woods Reservoir and the AEDC property, then has a brief shared stretch with SR 55 in the city. The city sits at the edge of the Highland Rim on flatter ground than the country around it, so the roads in town are level. Most of the heavy calls we expect are breakdowns and collisions rather than terrain problems.
